What to wear in 60 degree weather
At a feels-like 60°F (16°C), wear a t-shirt under a hoodie, with jeans and sneakers. That covers most of the day. What makes 60°F awkward is that it sits two degrees below a band edge, so a small difference in how you personally run heat changes the answer completely.
Search this question and you get eleven outfit ideas, then twelve outfit ideas, then a great many photographs of people in trench coats. What you don't get is a number. Every guide says light layers. None of them says what actually changes at 61, or at 59.
So here's the number first, and then the more interesting part: why 60°F is a temperature people genuinely argue about.

The hoodie band is ten degrees wide, wider than anything else in this stretch. 60°F sits near the top of it, which is the whole story of this article.
Why 60 degrees is the temperature people argue about
The engine doesn't think in outfits. It thinks in warmth points, and each band asks for a total.
A t-shirt is worth 2. A long sleeve, a hoodie, a fleece and a sweater are each worth 3. A light jacket is 2. The 52 to 62°F band asks for 5 points on your upper half, and a t-shirt plus a hoodie hits it exactly. So does a long sleeve under a light jacket, which is the same 5 by a different route.
That's worth a second, because it explains why two of our articles can recommend different clothes for the same afternoon without contradicting each other. Do I need a jacket today puts you in a light jacket at 60°F. Hoodie and jeans weather puts you in a hoodie. Same warmth, different shape, and the engine is happy with either.
Now look at the band above. From 62°F up, the target drops from 5 points to 3. One garment, no layering.
That's not a gentle taper. It's the sharpest single step anywhere in the mild part of the range, and 60°F sits two degrees underneath it.
At 60°F you're not in the middle of a band. You're near the edge of one, and edges are where people disagree.
Here's where it stops being theoretical. The app knows something the website deliberately doesn't: it asks whether you run hot or cold, which is worth a 4°F (2°C) offset straight away. Rate a few outfits and that grows by up to another 6°F (3°C), learned separately for cold, mild and warm days. Ten degrees is the ceiling in either direction.
Run that against a single 60°F forecast:
- Runs cold, 4 degrees down. Effectively 56°F. T-shirt, hoodie, jeans, sneakers.
- Neutral, no offset. 60°F. T-shirt, hoodie, jeans, sneakers.
- Runs hot, 4 degrees up. Effectively 64°F. Long sleeve and jeans. The hoodie is gone.
One profile question, the mildest adjustment the app makes, and the third person is wearing something different from the other two. Push it out to the learned ceiling and the spread gets faintly ridiculous: at the cold end you're in a fleece, at the warm end you're in a t-shirt on its own, from the same forecast.

The thermometer says 60, your skin says 54
Wind is what catches people at this temperature, and there's a specific reason your weather app tends to be useless about it.
The US wind chill formula stops at 50°F. The heat index doesn't start until around 80°F. In between, a lot of apps have nothing to calculate, so they show you plain air temperature with the words "feels like" next to it. 60°F sits in the middle of that dead zone. We pulled the whole mechanism apart in feels like vs actual temperature.
Comfie reads Open-Meteo's apparent temperature instead, which folds wind, humidity and solar radiation together at any temperature, so the gap never opens up.
Once you have a real feels-like number, the wind rule is blunt. Above 20 mph the engine adds a windbreaker over the hoodie. At exactly 20 it doesn't. At 21 it does. The windbreaker is only worth 1 warmth point, which is the tell: its job is cutting the wind rather than insulating you, so it arrives as an extra piece instead of a heavier one.
A still, sunny 60°F and a 25 mph 60°F are different days. Only one of them needs a shell.
Is 60 degrees cold? Depends what you're coming off
Cold isn't a property of the air. It's a comparison, and your body has been keeping notes all year.
60°F in March, after a winter in the 30s, feels like a reprieve. People sit outside in t-shirts. The same 60°F in late September, after a summer of 85s, feels like the season turning over, and those same people are reaching for a jacket. Identical air, opposite reactions, six months apart.
That's not only in your head, and the two directions aren't symmetrical. Studying a thermally extreme continental climate, de Freitas and Grigorieva (2015) found that the acclimatization transition from warm-to-cold produces more thermophysiological strain than the transition from cold-to-warm. Their October mortality figures ran 25% above September's, while the spring transition showed a much smaller bump.
That's a mortality study in a place with genuinely brutal winters, so don't read your Tuesday commute into it. But the direction holds up, and it matches what everyone already notices: cooling down is harder on you than warming up.
The practical version is that September's 60°F deserves more respect than March's. Worth being straight about the limit here: the forecast can't tell the difference, and the engine, which only ever sees one day's numbers, can't either. You can. If you're two weeks out of a hot summer, treat 60°F as the colder end of its band and put the hoodie on.
Your top half can change its mind, your legs can't
A day that reads 60°F at noon was probably 48°F at seven in the morning.
The hoodie handles that easily. Take it off, tie it round your waist, put it back on at six. That's what a hoodie is for, and it's part of why the engine reaches for one here rather than a sweater of identical warmth.
Your jeans don't get that option.
Every bottom in Comfie's catalog is flagged as not adjustable, along with base shirts and shoes. The day plan will happily tell you the hoodie comes off at 11am. It will never tell you to change your trousers at 2pm, because you'd have to go home to do it.
So the two halves get chosen from different numbers. Top half: dress for the coldest hour you'll actually be outside. Bottom half: dress for the warmest. At 60°F both answers land on jeans, which makes this one of the easier days of the year, but the rule is what rescues you in April when the same forecast swings 25 degrees. Is 60 degrees cold?
It's mild, and it reads cool to most people. Room temperature sits in the low 70s°F (around 22°C), so 60°F (16°C) is about ten degrees under what your body treats as neutral. Whether it feels cold depends on the season you're coming out of. 60°F in March feels generous. The same 60°F in September feels like autumn showing up.
Can you wear shorts in 60 degree weather?
Not by Comfie's numbers. Shorts start at a feels-like 80°F (27°C), and the strongest runs-hot profile only pulls that down to 70°F (21°C). At a 60°F forecast there is no profile and no weather combination that reaches shorts. You can wear them anyway, of course, but that's a preference rather than a weather decision.
What does 60 degrees feel like with wind?
Colder, and above 20 mph it changes what you should put on. What shoes should you wear in 60 degree weather?
Sneakers. Comfie keeps sneakers on from 42°F (6°C) all the way to 84°F (29°C), with boots taking over at 41°F (5°C) and below and sandals from 85°F (29°C) up. Shoes are one of the things you can't change halfway through the day, so pick them for the coldest and wettest hour you'll be outside, not for noon.
Is 60 degrees warm enough for a dress?
Yes, as long as you add the same warmth anyone else needs. Comfie's catalog is built from tops and bottoms rather than dresses, so the engine won't name one, but the arithmetic still applies. The 52 to 62°F band asks for about five warmth points on your upper half, and a dress by itself is closer to two. A cardigan or light jacket over it, plus tights, covers the difference.
So what do you wear today?
Three numbers, about fifteen seconds:
- The feels-like temperature, not the thermometer. If it lands anywhere from 52 to 62°F (11 to 17°C), it's a t-shirt under a hoodie with jeans. Above 62°F, drop to a long sleeve on its own.
- The wind. Past 20 mph, add something that blocks it. A windbreaker over the hoodie beats a thicker hoodie, because the problem is air moving through, not a lack of insulation.
- What you've been used to. Coming off a hot summer, 60°F will feel colder than the band suggests. Coming off a cold winter, warmer. The forecast has no idea which one you are.
If it's 60°F, calm, and you own a hoodie, you already have the answer and you can stop reading. That's most of spring and a good chunk of autumn.
