Do I need a hoodie today?
Wear a hoodie if the feels-like temperature is between 52 and 62°F (11 and 17°C). Above 62°F a long sleeve does the job on its own. Below 52°F the hoodie still works, but the t-shirt under it has to go.
Every other page answers this with a range fifteen degrees wide. 50 to 65. 50 to 68. One guide manages to say 50 to 65°F for a hoodie and 40 to 55°F for a fleece in the same article, which would put both garments on at 52°F and neither of them clearly in charge. A range that size isn't an answer. It's a shrug, and it doesn't help at 7am when you're holding the hoodie and deciding.
At what temperature is it hoodie weather?
Hoodie weather is a feels-like 52 to 62°F (11 to 17°C). Inside that band Comfie's engine puts a hoodie over a t-shirt and stops there. At 62°F it drops the hoodie and leaves a long sleeve. At 51°F it keeps the hoodie but swaps the t-shirt underneath for something warmer.
What makes this question harder than it looks is that the hoodie doesn't simply switch off at one end and stay on at the other. Walk down the thermometer and it appears, disappears, comes back as a mid layer, then leaves for good. Four changes, not one.
62°F is where the hoodie comes off
At a feels-like 61°F (16°C) the engine returns a t-shirt with a hoodie over it. At 62°F (17°C) it returns a long sleeve and nothing else. One degree.
The math underneath is the reason the line sits exactly there.

The 52 to 62°F band asks for 5 points. T-shirt 2, hoodie 3. That's the outfit.
At 62°F the target falls to 3, and 3 is a long sleeve by itself. You can't build 3 points with a hoodie in the stack unless you wear it against your skin, which is a different decision and not one a weather app should make for you. So the hoodie leaves.
This is why every "50 to 65°F" answer you'll read is wrong at the top. 65°F asks for 3 points. A hoodie there puts you at 5 or 6, which is two full layers of overshoot, and you feel it about ten minutes into the walk.

The 48°F gap, where the hoodie survives and the t-shirt doesn't
Drop to 51°F (10°C) and the target moves from 5 points to 6. T-shirt plus hoodie is 5. You're one short.
The instinct is to put something over the hoodie. That's the wrong end of the outfit. Swap the t-shirt for a long sleeve and you're at 3 plus 3, which is 6 exactly, and you haven't added a garment to carry.
Comfie's own pick in this band is a fleece over a long sleeve, and that's the identical 6 points, so if the hoodie is what you own, keep it on. The arithmetic doesn't care which of the two you reach for. What it does care about is the shirt underneath, and that's the part every "50 to 65°F" guide skips straight past.
Four degrees wide, this band, and it's where most of the bad mornings live. You wore the 55°F outfit on a 49°F day and you were cold, and you probably blamed the hoodie.
Under 40°F the hoodie becomes a mid layer
Between 40 and 48°F (4 and 9°C) the target is 8. Long sleeve 3, hoodie 3, puffer vest 2. The hoodie is still in the outfit. It just isn't the outside of it anymore.
Rain moves this one. On a calm dry day the engine picks the vest, and the moment there's real rain in the forecast it swaps to a light jacket, which is worth the same 2 points but has sleeves and a bit of weather resistance. Wind alone doesn't change the temperature math at all, for a reason worth knowing: the feels-like number already contains the wind chill, so counting wind twice would dress you for a colder day than the one outside.
Below 40°F (4°C) the target jumps to 10 and the hoodie drops out completely, replaced by a fleece under a puffer coat. That's the coat threshold, and it's a one-degree flip of its own.
In Celsius, 16 is a yes and 17 is a no
The band converts awkwardly, which is why this trips people up.
16°C is 60.8°F, comfortably inside. 17°C is 62.6°F, just outside. So the answer genuinely flips between two adjacent whole numbers in Celsius, and there's no rounding that makes both of them true.
18 and 19°C are long sleeve weather. By 20°C (68°F) you're in a plain t-shirt and a hoodie is a decision about how you want to look, not about staying warm. That's a fine reason to wear one. It just isn't this question.
What moves the line
The band assumes the feels-like number, not the air temperature. Those come apart by ten degrees or more on a windy day, and the feels-like figure is the one your body actually experiences. Reading the wrong one is the most common way to get this decision wrong before you've even started.
Time of day is the other one. A hoodie has nothing under it except a t-shirt, so it's the least adjustable thing you can wear. On a day that starts at 50°F and hits 66°F by lunch, the hoodie is right for about three hours and wrong for the rest, and there's a better way to dress a swing like that.
If the number in front of you is 60°F, that sits in the middle of the band and the hoodie is a straightforward yes. What to put with it is the more interesting question at that point. No, and only just. 17°C is 62.6°F, which lands one degree outside the top of the band. Comfie's engine returns a long sleeve on its own there. Drop to 16°C (60.8°F) and the hoodie comes back. This is the single closest call on the whole scale.
Is 20 degrees hoodie weather?
No, and this one isn't close. 20°C is 68°F, six degrees above the top of the hoodie band, and the engine returns a plain t-shirt. You can wear a hoodie at 20°C if you like the look, but you'll be carrying it within the hour.
What temp is hoodie weather?
A feels-like 52 to 62°F, or 11 to 17°C. That's the band where a hoodie over a t-shirt is the whole top half of the outfit. Above 62°F a long sleeve replaces it, and below 52°F the t-shirt underneath has to become a long sleeve.
Is it too hot to wear a hoodie today?
If today's feels-like temperature is 62°F (17°C) or higher, yes. That's the point where the engine stops asking for 5 warmth points on your top half and starts asking for 3, and 3 is a long sleeve with nothing over it. Check the feels-like number rather than the air temperature.
Should I wear a hoodie tomorrow?
Look at two numbers on tomorrow's forecast, not one. If the feels-like low is 52°F (11°C) or above and the high stays under 62°F (17°C), a hoodie covers the whole day. If the high climbs past 62°F, you'll want something you can take off, because the hoodie has no layer under it to fall back on.
So, do you need a hoodie today?
Two numbers, about ten seconds:
- Today's feels-like low. Between 52 and 62°F (11 and 17°C), the hoodie is the answer on its own. Between 48 and 52°F (9 and 11°C) it still works, with a long sleeve under it instead of a tee. Under 48°F you're adding something over the top as well.
- Today's feels-like high. If it climbs past 62°F (17°C), the hoodie becomes something you carry. That's the day to wear the long sleeve and leave it on the hook.
And if the number you're looking at is 61, 62 or 63, you've landed on the one degree where this genuinely flips. That's not a rounding error in the forecast. It's the point where your top half needs 5 warmth points instead of 3, and a hoodie is the difference.
