What to wear in 50 degree weather
At a feels-like 50°F (10°C), wear a long sleeve under a fleece, with jeans and sneakers. Two layers on top, and no jacket yet. That's the answer on a still day. Add a 10 mph breeze and it stops being the answer, which is why 50 degree weather deserves a closer look than most.
Nearly every guide to this temperature says three layers, finished with a light jacket. We ran 50°F through Comfie's outfit engine and it disagrees on both counts. Here's the working, which at 50°F is the useful part.
What to wear at 50 degrees, by feels-like
At a feels-like 50°F (10°C), wear a long sleeve under a fleece, with jeans and sneakers. That's two layers on top and no jacket. Comfie's engine wants 6 warmth points on your upper half here, and a long sleeve (3) plus a fleece (3) hits it exactly. A sweater or a hoodie can stand in for the fleece.

Fifty sits two degrees from two different outfits
Comfie's engine thinks in warmth points, not outfits. A t-shirt is 2. A long sleeve, a hoodie, a fleece and a sweater are 3 each. A light jacket and a puffer vest are 2. Each band asks for a total on your top half, and around 50°F those totals move fast:
- 52°F and up wants 5. A t-shirt (2) plus a hoodie (3).
- 48 to 51°F wants 6. A long sleeve (3) plus a fleece (3).
- 40 to 47°F wants 8. Long sleeve, hoodie and puffer vest, which is 3 plus 3 plus 2.
- 39°F and below wants 10, and the vest gives way to a puffer.
Go two degrees up from 50 and you drop a point and swap the long sleeve for a t-shirt. Go two degrees down and you pick up two points and a third layer. Nowhere else in the engine do two band edges sit this close together.
That matters because 50°F rarely stays 50°F. Forecasts round, and the number drifts through the morning. "About 50" can mean anything from 46 to 54, which is three different outfits. It's also why advice about this temperature is all over the place: someone at 53°F says a hoodie is plenty, someone at 47°F says take a jacket, and both call it 50 degree weather.

50°F is where wind chill switches on
This sounds like trivia. It's the most useful fact on the page.
The US wind chill formula, the one the National Weather Service has used since 2001, only applies at 50°F and below. Above 50, officially, wind doesn't move the number. At 50, it starts. And at 50°F it doesn't take much wind to do a lot.

Read down the middle column. The first 10 mph of breeze costs you four degrees. The next 20 mph costs you four more. Wind chill front-loads the damage, and 10 mph isn't much of a wind. It's the one that keeps leaves moving and holds a light flag out straight.
And four degrees is exactly enough. 50°F sits two degrees above a band edge, so a gentle breeze turns a two-layer day into a three-layer day. On a still morning the fleece is perfect. With that flag standing out, the engine goes to a long sleeve, a hoodie and a puffer vest. (Already in the fleece? A vest over it is the same 8 points.)
Past 20 mph the vest becomes a light jacket, same warmth, because sleeves block wind and a vest doesn't.
One honest caveat. These figures use the NWS formula because anyone can check it, and your weather app may not. Some apps show plain air temperature from 50 to 80°F, and others fold in humidity and sun, so their feels-like can land a few degrees either side of this table. Swap the fleece for whatever you own
The engine names a fleece. You don't need to own one. Anything worth 3 points does the same job over a long sleeve, so the "outfits for every occasion" on other pages come down to one sum: a sweater for the office, a hoodie for errands, a fleece for a long walk because it dries fast if you warm up.
The swap that doesn't work is the one people make most. A hoodie over a t-shirt is 5 points. Perfect at 52°F, one short at 50°F, and you notice it standing at a bus stop far more than walking to one. Keep the hoodie and put a long sleeve under it instead.
The layer 50 degrees skips
So where's the light jacket every other guide puts on top?
Count it. A long sleeve plus a light jacket is 3 plus 2, which makes 5, and 50°F wants 6. That missing point is the chilly-in-a-jacket feeling plenty of people know from this exact temperature. By warmth alone, a light jacket over one shirt is a 52 to 62°F outfit.
A fleece under the jacket gets you to 8, which is fine if the evening is heading down or you run cold. On a still, dry afternoon the jacket adds nothing the fleece hasn't covered. Its real jobs at 50°F are blocking wind past 20 mph and keeping rain off. Do I need a jacket today has the full handoff.
A coat is further off still. The engine doesn't reach for a puffer until 39°F (4°C), eleven degrees colder.
Rain at 50 degrees adds an umbrella, not a layer
Rain doesn't touch the warmth math, because feels-like already covers how cold the air is. It only changes what you carry and what's on your feet.
- A shower at some point. A 50% chance at any hour brings an umbrella. Sneakers stay.
- Rain that settles in. Four or more hours at 70% or higher adds rain boots too.
- Rain with wind past 20 mph. An umbrella would only flip inside out, so a rain jacket goes over the fleece instead.
On a wet day, pick the fleece over the hoodie. Polyester dries fast. A cotton hoodie that gets damp at 9am can still be damp at 5pm.
Same 50 degrees, two different people
At 50°F you'll see t-shirts and puffers on the same block. They aren't all wrong.
The app, though not this website, asks one question at setup: do you run hot or cold? That's worth 4°F either way. Then it learns from your ratings, up to another 6°F. Run one 50°F forecast through the setup question alone:
- Runs cold, 4 degrees down. Effectively 46°F. Long sleeve, hoodie, puffer vest.
- Neutral. 50°F. Long sleeve, fleece.
- Runs hot, 4 degrees up. Effectively 54°F. T-shirt and hoodie.

The season does the same to everyone at once. 50°F in March, after a winter in the 30s, feels mild. 50°F in October, after a summer of 80s, feels like a cold snap. Yes, if there's a long sleeve under it. A hoodie over a t-shirt is 5 warmth points and a feels-like 50°F (10°C) asks for 6. It stops being enough once the wind reaches about 10 mph, which drags 50°F down to 46°F (8°C) and calls for a vest on top.
Is 50 degrees sweater weather?
Yes, for almost everyone. In a 2016 Weather Channel survey of 6,586 people, the average sweater cutoff was 60°F (16°C), and even the most cold-tolerant state, South Dakota, put it at 51°F (11°C). A sweater over a long sleeve is exactly the 6 warmth points Comfie wants at 50°F.
What does 50 degree weather feel like?
Cool, about twenty degrees under room temperature. A t-shirt feels cold within a few minutes of standing still, while a long sleeve and a fleece feel crisp and comfortable. A 10 mph breeze makes 50°F feel like 46°F (8°C) on the US wind chill scale.
What shoes should you wear in 50 degree weather?
Sneakers. Comfie keeps them on from 42°F (6°C) up, with boots at 41°F (5°C) and below. Rain that settles in, four or more hours at a 70% chance or higher, swaps them for rain boots. A single shower just adds an umbrella.
Is 50 degrees too cold for just a t-shirt?
Yes. A t-shirt is 2 warmth points and 50°F asks for 6. Comfie doesn't put a t-shirt on by itself until a feels-like 68°F (20°C), and around 50°F it only shows up under a hoodie, from 52°F (11°C) up.
So what do you wear today?
Four checks, in this order:
- The feels-like number. From 48 to 52°F (9 to 11°C), a long sleeve under a fleece. Above that, a t-shirt under a hoodie. Below, add a vest.
- The wind. At 50°F, 10 mph is enough to change the outfit. If the leaves are moving, go one layer up.
- The rain. An umbrella, plus rain boots if it's wet all day.
